Palme d’Or winner for Cannes 2007, Romanian film “4 luni, 3 saptamâni si 2 zile” is an almost detached look into the reality underprivileged people are faced with. Detached in a way na walang paghuhunos-dili ang pag-depict nito ng kawalan ng pag-asa, dignidad at moralidad. Maganda ang pagkasulat ng dialogue; matipid pero malalim at affecting talaga. In line sa tema ang lahat, but for some reason, I can’t get past how annoyingly distracting the handheld moved in some parts of the film. Angkop ang visuals (specially the location shots, emergerd!) at halos walang scoring which, for me, helps in maintaining the overall mood of oppressed – hence apathetic and cynical – existence. Look out for a couple or so very brilliantly-utilized scenes: the dinner and disposal (don’t worry, you’ll get it when you watch it) scenes immediately come to mind. But the best performance in the film is easily Anamaria Marinca’s Otilia. Napaka-human ng pagkasulat at pagkaganap sa kanya in a way na it never really is simple black and white when people are involved. Ang ganda ng complexity ng character na ito, lalo na when viewed in contrast sa sobrang pagka-one-dimensional ng lahat ng ibang characters – it’s almost comical. Pero what’s crystal clear about this film is hindi ito nagpapatawa. Nangsha-shock, nagpapa-iling, nagpapaisip, nagpapadecide at nagse-strengthen ng convictions ng mga tao, oo. And for all those things, I say the Cannes win is a deserved one.
